Why it exists
Plenty of living languages have a small footprint online. Most of what their speakers and learners read on the web is in English. Weeve puts a little of the language back onto those pages, one familiar word at a time, so it becomes part of the reading you already do.
Weeve started as a startup. This is its free revival. The extension runs entirely in your browser.
- FreeFree to use, with no paid tier and no ads.
- No account neededInstall it and it works. An account is optional, only to sync your words between computers.
- No trackingNo analytics. Your settings and saved words stay in your browser.
- You set the paceChoose from four levels, turn it off for any site, and mark words you know so they stop appearing.

AI weaving, if you want it
The word lists swap one word for another, so the grammar around them stays English. AI weaving asks a language model to choose words in a paragraph and give the form that fits in place, so articles, mutations and agreement come out right.
It is off by default and Weeve works fully without it. When you turn it on, the paragraphs you weave are sent only to the provider you choose.
| Provider | Cost | Default model |
|---|---|---|
| Ollama (recommended) | Free, runs on your computer | Salamandra 7B Instruct |
| OpenAI-compatible server LM Studio, llama.cpp, vLLM, OpenRouter | Free locally, or what the host charges | Salamandra 7B Instruct |
| Claude | Paid, with your own API key | Claude Haiku 5.5 |
Salamandra 7B Instruct is an open, Apache 2.0 model from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, trained on 35 European languages including Catalan and Irish. The 4-bit build needs about 5 GB of memory. To run it with Ollama:
ollama pull hf.co/mradermacher/salamandra-7b-instruct-2606-GGUF:Q4_K_M
OLLAMA_ORIGINS='chrome-extension://*' ollama serveThen open the popup, choose AI weaving → Set up, pick Ollama and press Check. Right-click any paragraph and choose Weave this paragraph with AI, or switch on Auto on this site. Results are cached in your browser, so rereading a page costs nothing.
Help with the words
The word lists were drafted with a language model and spot-checked. Native speakers have not reviewed them yet, so corrections are the most useful thing you can give. You can browse the lists in the app.
- Fix a translation. In the app's word lists, choose Suggest a fix on any word. If you're a native speaker or teacher, say so.
- Add a language. Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Basque, Galician and Breton would all fit. Suggest one.
- Report a page that breaks. Send feedback with the URL and what you saw.
Licences
Weeve is free to use under its terms. The word lists are published under CC BY-SA 4.0, because they build on FrequencyWords. Weeve also uses third-party software under its own licences.
