Weeve

Privacy policy

Last updated 28 October 2026. This covers the Weeve browser extension, version 2.0 and later, and this website.

Weeve has no analytics, and accounts are optional. Without an account, nobody who works on Weeve can see what you read, which words you save, or that you use it at all. With its default settings, the extension sends nothing over the network.

What the extension reads

To swap words, Weeve reads the text of the pages you visit. This happens inside your browser. Page text is matched against the word lists that ship with the extension and is not stored or sent anywhere, unless you turn on AI weaving (below).

The popup reads the address of the current tab so it can show the site's name and let you turn Weeve off there.

What the extension stores

Weeve keeps the following in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local), on your device only. It is not synced to your browser account.

  • Your settings: on or off, language, level, and the sites where Weeve is off.
  • The words you save and the words you mark as known.
  • If you set up AI weaving: your chosen provider, its server address, model name and API key, and the sites where it runs automatically.
  • If you use AI weaving: the words the model chose for each paragraph, stored under a one-way hash of the paragraph, so a page you read again doesn't need another request.

Removing the extension deletes all of it.

When data leaves your browser

Only when you turn on AI weaving. It is off by default. Once you choose a provider, the text of the paragraphs being woven is sent to that provider and no one else. That happens when you right-click and choose Weave this paragraph with AI, or as you scroll on a site where you switched on Auto on this site.

  • Ollama: sent to the address you enter, http://localhost:11434 by default, which is a program on your own computer.
  • OpenAI-compatible server: sent to the address you enter, http://localhost:1234/v1 by default. If you point it at a hosted service, that service's privacy policy applies, and your API key for it is sent only to it.
  • Claude: sent to Anthropic's API at api.anthropic.com with your own API key. Anthropic's privacy policy applies.

Each provider keeps its own address and key, so a key is only ever sent to the service it belongs to. Weeve sends the paragraph text and instructions for the model. It does not send the page address, your saved words or anything else.

Optional accounts

You can create an account in the Weeve app to keep your saved and known words the same on every computer. Signing in works by email link, with no password. If you create one, Weeve stores:

  • Your email address, used only to send sign-in links.
  • Your answers from getting started: the language you're learning, your starting level and why you're learning it.
  • Your saved words (word, translation, pronunciation, example sentence and date saved) and your known words.
  • Any corrections, language requests or feedback you send from the app.

This lives in a Supabase (Postgres) database run for Weeve, where row level security lets only your signed-in account read or change your words. The extension never sends anything to Weeve itself. When you open the app while signed in, the app asks the extension, on that page only, for your saved and known words, syncs them with your account, and writes the merged list back. Weeve doesn't store the pages you visit, their text, your AI keys or your settings. To stop syncing, sign out. To have your account and everything in it deleted, ask using the contact details below.

Pronunciation

The Say button uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis with a voice already on your system. Weeve does not send the word anywhere. Some browsers offer online voices, and if the voice your browser picks is one of those, the browser itself may send the word to its speech service.

Extension permissions

  • Access to all sites, to swap words on the pages you read and show the current site's name in the popup. It also lets Weeve reach the AI provider you choose, and answer the Weeve app on the app's own pages.
  • Storage, for the settings and words listed above.
  • Context menus, for the Weave this paragraph with AI menu item.

This website

This site, including the app at /app, is a set of static files hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It has no analytics, no cookies and no third-party scripts, and its fonts are served from this site. It keeps a few things in your browser's local storage: your light or dark choice, the language you picked, your answers from getting started (language, level and why you're learning), when you last synced, and, if you sign in, your session. Cloudflare may keep standard request logs, such as IP addresses, under its own privacy policy.

Children

Weeve isn't aimed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly create accounts for them. Without an account, it collects no personal information from anyone.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. For questions or to delete your account, send feedback.
